augmented reality

Augmented reality is a world where data overlays the real world. One of my very early posts features Kevin Kelly talking about the transition from Web 2.0 (where we are now) to the semantic web (where augmented reality is well and truly with us). The release of iPhone 3GS is moving us one step closer to that vision of a connected, interactive real world.

An augmented reality iPhone application appeared in the apps store yesterday. It works using the iPhone’s video camera, GPS and compass. If you happen to be in Paris, you can hold the iPhone up and data on your phone tells you where the closest Met station is.

Although Apple is not officially allowing augmented reality apps in the store until September, many have been developed already and anticipation for them is high. Imagine sitting on the subway, holding your smart phone up in front of the commuter opposite, and getting a reading on who they are, what they do, where their interests lie:

Or wandering around a foreign city, unsure of where to visit or eat:

The possibilities of augmented reality are exciting and vast. KCDC is bursting with ideas about how to use this technology in the art of storytelling – across multiple platforms and in the real world.

I don’t think there’s anything I find more exciting than the prospect of AR. I’m keenly awaiting more AR stuff to hit the iPhone.

There are some grand possibilities, especially with gaming. :D
